The Adoption Application assists us in finding a pet that is a good match for you, your family, your other pets, and your lifestyle.
The Home Visit is done in or near Orange County by a volunteer member of the Kennel Committee who will bring the dog or cat you want to adopt to your home when all family members are present. You will have time to spend with the pet in your home before making a final decision to adopt. Pets are checked for compatibility. Pets are not adopted on home visits.

While we do our best to identify special needs animals at intake, behavior and medical issues may be noted or arise at any time, which may cause an animal to appear on these lists any time after impound. These pages are live and are intended to provide the most current information on special needs animals at OC Animal Care. You are encouraged to check these lists frequently.

Animals on this web page are those that have medical or behavior issues that would be best handled by our Adoption Partners. Animals are designated on this list as (behavior) or . There may also be animals designated as just . RESQ animals may be animals too young for adoption or animals that have special circumstances.

Holding periods

- These animals are in need of immediate rescue commitment. They have already met their legal retention period and have been evaluated and found to not be suitable for public adoption. Once an animal is designated RESQ-BHV it will be given 5 days for rescue organizations to commit to adopting. The holding period will end on the review date. If your organization is interested in a dog that is RESQ-BHV, they will need to contact the Rescue Coordinator prior to the review date to make arrangements to adopt.

- These animals have been evaluated by our veterinary staff and have been determined to have medical concerns that are going to need significant care or investment by their adopter. These animals may be adopted by rescue organizations or the public on their review date. Due to the severe medical issues some of these pets may have, they may be set for euthanasia any time after their legal holding period has passed. If your organization is interested in a dog that is MEDICAL, they should contact the Rescue Coordinator prior to the review date to make arrangements to adopt.

– These animals are recommended for placement with rescue organizations. Under age puppies or kittens can be picked up by a rescue organization immediately. Mothers and nursing babies may be picked up at the end of the legal retention period.
