Dear Santa,

This last year was really rough. I think I was nice, but since I nearly lost my life and didn’t feel like myself, I’m not sure if maybe I might have been naughty.

Still, I guess I must have been nice, because I ended up at Animal Services and then with Dusty from Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. She took me to Dickman Road Veterinary Clinic, where they kept me for eight days until I began to recover from pneumonia and act like a dog again. Knowing that Dusty is a KAR volunteer and that the rescue has limited funds, the vet clinic provided their services at a great discount. Once I made it back to Dusty, she was amazed that I was so perky and playful. They tell me that I was so bad off at the shelter that I appeared to be seven or eight years old, but the vet discovered that I am only one or two.

While I was so sick, I wished for these things:Apparently, you came early! I just found out that EVERY wish on this list has come true! I have a forever home, two sisters - Annabelle and Sandie - and a mom Julia who loves me unconditionally. That window seat was pie in the sky, but it sure feels good to lie there in the sun with my doggy friend.

For Christmas, maybe you could just bring mom Julia, sisters Annabelle and Sandie, Dusty, KAR, and that nice vet something so they know how much I appreciate them for saving my life. I have everything I could ever want!

The KCASE shelter holds stray animals according to State and Local laws and ordinances.

Domestic animals are housed for 7 days if they came in without ID, or 10 days if the owner is known or the animal is identified via a pet ID tag, dog license, microchip or other form of identification.

Wildlife will be rehabilitated or euthanized as determined by KCASE staff depending on the severity of the illness/injury and the availability of a state licensed rehabilitator.

Exotic pets can be adopted on a case-by-case scenario to approved adopters. Exotic pets are not permitted in many areas of Kalamazoo County.

During the 7 or 10 day holding period, animals are held exclusively for the owner to reclaim them. If no owner comes forward, adoptable animals will be available to approved potential adopters for rehoming.

is a non-profit, no-kill dog and cat rescue group with a full-service shelter in Kalamazoo / Portage but serving all of Southwest Michigan. We have more than 150 volunteers, many with years of experience in animal rescue. The well-being of rescued pets is our only priority. You can read more about us on our website page.Kalamazoo County Animal Services & Enforcement (KCASE) is the only stray animal shelter in Kalamazoo County. If an adoptable animal is lost or removed by an Animal Enforcement Officer, that animal is available for adoption after its 7-10 days Stray hold. While KCASE does everything they can to hold adoptable animals until the perfect home is found, shelter space does limit the number of animals that can be held onto.Duke, a pitbull/terrier mix, came to Kalamazoo Animal Rescue from the local animal shelter. According to Susan C., a KAR volunteer, “He was the best foster.”A lack of foresight guided the construction of the 33-year-old shelter, said Animal Services Director Steve Lawrence, making it difficult to provide a safe, clean space for animals. During a Tuesday meeting of the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners, members of a county animal services advisory board said it's clear the facility is inadequate for the Animal Services and Enforcement division.Kalamazoo Animal Rescue (KAR) is an all-volunteer, animal rescue agency consisting of private foster homes (not a shelter) providing limited space for housing animals. When space is available, stray, abandoned, and unwanted animals will be assessed for adoptability to be placed into foster care until permanent homes are found.During the last four months, community partners and elected officials on the Kalamazoo County Animal Services Advisory Board worked to identify problems with the shelter and animal enforcement. Its ultimate recommendation is to replace the current 6,166 square-foot building at 2500 Lake St. with a new $5 million facility on Lamont Street near the Kalamazoo County Jail.
