Athenspets, Inc. is an all-volunteer Georgia nonprofit, tax exempt corporation dedicated to finding permanent homes or rescues for all the animals at Athens-Clarke County Animal Control. Athenspets started in 2001 by one intrepid volunteer named Allyson who created a webpage to advertise the dogs currently at the pound. (At the time, our Humane Society handled the cats.) Over the years more volunteers joined, the website became more sophisticated and we provided more help for the dogs and cats through sponsorships and the Athenspets Medical Fund. We are proud that this website has greatly increased the number of rescues and adoptions at Athens Animal Control year after year.

Each year, the Athens Limestone Animal Shelter accepts more than 3,000 dogs and cats from animal control officers in Athens and Limestone County and from citizens who find strays or can no longer care for their pets. Every effort is made to reunite lost animals with their families and to find loving, forever homes for every adoptable dog and cat. The Athens Area Humane Society is a donor supported no-kill 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to lowering area euthanasia rates through adoption, spay/neuter, and pet retention programs. The cost of adoption is $50, which includes a certain vaccinations (distemper and parvo for dogs, feline leukemia and FIV for cats), an adoption information packet, and a implanted microchip. We transport all adopted dogs and cats that are at least 10 weeks old for spay or neuter surgery. You, as the adopter, are responsible for the cost of spay or neuter and for returning proof of surgery to Animal Control. Adopters must obtain a rabies vaccination for their dog or cat by the time the pet is four months old. We welcome both families and individuals to visit us and interact with the dogs and cats at our facility. The Athens Area Humane Society is a donor supported no-kill, non-profit organization dedicated to lowering area euthanasia rates through rescue, adoption, spay/neuter, education, and pet retention programs. Rescue costs for even a young and healthy dog or cat can be expensive, so multiple sponsorships for one animal are appreciated! Nearly every dog or cat from Athens Animal Control needs, at minimum, to be spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and put on monthly flea and heartworm preventative. If the dog or cat is old, pregnant, or has health issues such as heartworms (preventable, but very common in Georgia) the costs increase dramatically. Rescue groups are often the only hope for these less adoptable pets, and for this they deserve our endless gratitude.
