Most jurisdictions have ordnances requiring that owners keep their pets under control at all times. If a free running animal hits or is hit by your vehicle, you are not likely to be held liable. The owner may be cited, and may be held responsible for costs associated with the accident. This may include any medical bills for the animal, and may also include repair of any damage to your vehicle.

While all dogs need to exercise, especially given that , according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, make sure your dog is in shape before entering any event. If exercise is new for your dog, begin with a few blocks of running or walking, and gradually increase by 15 percent each week, says Lindsay Seilheimer, D.V.M., C.C.R.P., rehabilitative medicine veterinarian at the Veterinary Specialty Center in Chicago.

Running at large statutes are also meant to reinforce responsible pet care. Securing a pet in a safe place or walking a dog on a leash will reduce the potential anguish and expense of losing a loved pet. Confinement must be humane for the animal as well as secure and safe. Both unsterilized and sterilized dogs should be required to be confined under the law, as the law is intended to address concerns regarding safety as well as population control. The rural setting means wild animal encounters are the norm: runners typically see wild turkeys, hawks, sandhill cranes, deer, buffalo and goats. To learn more about sports nutrition for dogs, I spoke recently with Dr. Joseph Wakshlag, a professor of clinical nutrition and sports medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, N.Y., and the author of a comprehensive new review about nutrition for active dogs, in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice. Among its many tidbits of knowledge, the article notes that dogs are endowed with more endurance-related muscle fibers than cats, making them better running companions; competing in a Frisbee or agility competition is, for a dog, glorious fun but relatively little exercise, requiring only about 25 percent more calories than lying on a rug; and consuming sports drinks tends to cause dogs to empty their intestines soon afterward, often with little warning. They may be tiny, but Jack russell terriers pack a powerful punch in those sturdy little legs. “Generally speaking, medium-sized dogs are best for running, but Jack russell terriers are the exception,” says Melissa Bacelar, an animal behaviorist and founder of the rescue organization, the Poopie Foundation in Studio City, CA. These terriers require more activity than most smaller breeds. But take note: They can be aggressive with other dogs and require a lot of attention, discipline and patience from owners. So you should be willing to put up with their feisty nature. ALSO CONSIDER: Whippets. Mini English greyhounds, these guys can clock speeds up to 35 MPH and are amazing sprinters, rivaled by no other breed.
